Week OnepRETZEL sUNDAY

"Why make pretzels in Lent?" Historically, Lent was observed as a time of fasting and repentance. Christians ate no rich foods - no meat, cheese, eggs or even milk. Bread was shaped into arms crossed in prayer and baked. This bread was called Bracellae - the Latin word meaning Little Arms.As this tradition spread into Central and Northern Europe, the German word Pretzel was used instead. Pretzels were only baked from the Sunday before Ash Wednesday - Easter Sunday - and then they disappeared until the next year. Ordinarily, we would be making pretzels in Sunday School, but due to the Coronavirus, we invite you to share this activity as a family. PLEASE TAKE PHOTOS AND EMAIL THEM TO [email protected]. We'll share the pictures on our bulletin board!
