Groundhogs and Candles
Do groundhogs and candles go together? Why is that even a question? Oddly enough, the Christian church shares a festival with Groundhogs' Day. Christians remember that 40 days after Mary gives birth to Jesus, she goes to the Temple to be purified according to the law of Moses, and Jesus is dedicated as Simeon and Anna recognize that he is the long-awaited Messiah. As February 2nd is exactly 40 days after Christmas, (remember Sundays don't count!), Candlemas as it is called always falls on Groundhogs' Day.
Candlemas gets its name from candles which blaze brilliantly during Epiphany as the Light of the World - Jesus- is made known to all people. In earlier times, people would bring candles from and have them blessed at the church on February 2nd. As January drags into February, we could all use a little bit of extra light. Gather your family light as many candles as you can in the darkness! |

A Candlemas Prayer
God of light, we know that there is never any person or situation that is beyond the light of your love. In the name of Jesus, guide us as we step into your loving light with purpose and hope this night and always. Amen.
